A common reason for surrendering companion animals to shelters is the inability to feed them due to economic hardship. Sadly, most surrendered pets do not find new homes. Most are euthanized due to the over-crowding and limited budgets of the too few shelters which serve the South Bay.
By providing food to the pets of people in need and to animal rescue groups, CAFE San Jose's goals are: 1) to reduce the shockingly high rate of companion animal euthanasia by Bay Area shelters and 2) to lessen the heartbreak for those who must make the impossible decision to surrender a cherished and faithful companion.

CAFE San Jose also works in tandem with other agencies, such as Meals on Wheels, to help provide pet food, pet supplies or veterinary services to low-
or no-income residents of Santa Clara County. If possible, CAFE San Jose will deliver pet food to local residents if transportation is not available.
In the near future, the CAFE San Jose website will provide resource information for low cost spay and neuter, vaccination clinics and local trap, neuter/spay and release (TNR) programs for controlling the feral cat population in the South Bay.
CAFE San Jose will also allocate a certain percentage of all money donated to a veterinary services fund. This fund will be used to cover the costs of veterinary procedures needed for animals-in-need.
In the event of a catastrophe or natural disaster, CAFE San Jose hopes to serve as a central hub for collecting and distributing pet food and supplies to the guardians and companion animals affected.
Donations of food, money, pet medications and supplies are urgently needed to help build our food bank inventory. Monetary donations are used to cover operating costs, provide free or low-cost veterinary care to pets-in-need, and to buy additional food and supplies when stocks are low or depleted. Food, medications and supplies are distributed on a daily or as-needed basis to assist the following individuals and groups:
CAFE San Jose is always in need of unopened bags and cans of quality pet food. High quality food is preferred as feeding pets a high quality diet will decrease the risk of health problems which arise from poor nutrition. Such health problems often result in expensive veterinary bills which would only add to the financial burden of the individuals and rescue groups we aim to assist.
Donated food and treats should not contain chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin) or artificial coloring (e.g., kibble or treats which are colored red, green or yellow will typically contain chemical food dyes.)

As the CAFE San Jose Pet Food Bank is a brand new operation, we are currently searching for warehouse space in the San Francisco South Bay area. Preferable locales include San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, or Cupertino. Other locations will also be considered.
We are looking for a small warehouse or warehouse/office combination of approximately 1,000 square feet. The warehouse unit must have air conditioning as we will be storing food and medications within it.
Space which is donated will be tax-deductible as we are in the process of applying for 501(c)3 status and expect to have our application approved soon. We will also consider leasing a space at a rate which is at or below the fair market rate (less than $1.00 per square foot).
